Five Essentials for Every Guest Room

A Warm Welcome

While the guest room over here at the Fields Casa is getting a little cosier as we prepare for Baby Girl’s arrival (my home office is being combined with the guest room to make room for the nursery), there are a few essentials that make even the coziest of guest spaces feel special, which is really what it’s all about.

Clear the clutter

It is easy for extra spaces like guest rooms to become catch-alls while not in use. Consider this a good time to purge unnecessary items & put away any clutter that may have accumulated there. To avoid the pre-arrival jitters, give yourself enough time beforehand to prep the room if needed.

Pro Tip: Since our guest room is now also an office and craft room, I keep an empty storage basket to toss things in that I’m still working on, but don’t want out while guests are there—- the good ol’ Stash & Dash!

A roomy nightstand

Your nightstands may be beautifully styled, but make sure there is enough clear surface area for your guests to place a glass of water & cell phone.

Having a convenient charging cord available near the bed is an added bonus!

Extra blankets

It’s always a good idea to place an extra blanket in the room along with the towels in case your guests get chilly during the night. Even in the middle of our sweltering Carolina summers I make sure there is an extra blanket available, just in case.

Window coverings

Your guest room may not be used all that frequently, but rest assured your guests will want some privacy while using the space. If you don’t have blinds, make sure there is a curtain that can be closed. (And, yes, this is recommended from personal experience feeling rather exposed on more than one occasion.)

Our guest room window faces east and is flooded with beautiful morning sun. But, for our guests who are not early risers, we bought blackout curtains to block both the morning light (and the daytime heat in the summertime).

Plus, it’s easy enough to leave them open and close the blinds if the morning light is a welcome wake up call.

A small trash can

This is one of those simple things that can be easy to overlook, especially in a space that is used irregularly, but is very convenient.

A Special Detail

My mother-in- law always made sure there were fresh flowers in our room whenever we came to visit, and this small detail always made me feel welcomed.

Similarly, I still recall my mom’s best friend placing a chocolate on our pillow every night, and in the winter she would even put a heated water bottle under the covers for us. (Talk about an amazing host!)

Even a simple sprig of fresh greenery from the garden or a handwritten note can make your guests feel like you have been anticipating their visit.

I hope these tips help you feel prepared for your next arrivals, and if your guest room needs a little refresh, either in style or organizing, you know where to find me!
